Posted by whitey on 8/27/2007 on whitey's blog After about a four-week break from racing and primarily training for cyclocross, I stepped up to the start line again. It was great; I felt that nervous feeling again! It’s a feeling I’ve missed and maybe even a little bit necessary. The Niwot CRIT used to be a NRC event but hasn’t been held since 2003. The course runs through beautiful downtown Niwot and features two 100-degree turns on a figure-eight course. I had a great start and stayed in the top 20 most of the race. I went on three attempted breaks that all ended up getting swallowed by the field. On my final attempt I almost got spit out the back but held on and eventually recovered. About half the field had pulled out by this point and a small break of three stayed away. Guess I picked the wrong one. I spent the rest of the race seeing spots and trying to maintain my handling skills. We averaged about 30 mph for 90 minutes with 8 corners per lap. That’s a lot of accelerations but the meat-sticks felt good. My training is putting me exactly where I want to be for a good cross season. I can’t wait for Cross Vegas. | |
