Posted by whitey on 7/10/2007 on whitey's blogDid you watch the Tour yesterday? I thought it was awesome to see those three guys work together and gain around three minutes on the peloton. Next came the tough lovin as the three started to attack each other and became enemies with 25 miles to go. It seemed a little early to start games but who knows what they knew. Sure enough the peloton reeled them in with around 11 to go and the lead out guys started pulling for their sprinters. Then within 3 km and going 33.5 mph there was a huge crash stopping almost the entire field. The 20 or so rides in front of the crash didn’t miss a beat and kept the lead out going. T-mobile went too early and Quickstep took over with two guys leading out my favorite rider Tom Boonen. After his first rider pulled off Gent Steegmans lead him out but didn’t pull off in time for Boonen to get the win. So the lead out rider, Steegmans, won the stage with Boonen in 2nd. Everything I’ve read has made it sound like Boonen gave him the win as a gift but I think that’s bull. Boonen’s going for the green jersey which means he needs all the time bonuses and points he can get. It makes no sense for a teammate to take those from him. Steegmans should have finished second allowing Boonen to get the majority while still taking the second place points from competing teams. I’ll bet the real story is different then what we are reading and seeing on TV. Just look at Boonen's face in the picture linked here, does it look like he's letting him win? Boonen and his team directors are probably pissed, but like I said earlier, “Who knows what they know?”
