Posted by atannehill on 7/2/2007 Well, I'm a newbie to this board and to cycling. I used to ride a lot when I was younger and feel the call once again. So I got fitted for a good bike and would like to ride to work at least once a week. (11 mile one way trip) But first I need to overcome exercise induced asthma. Any tips? | |

Go to your doctor and get an inhaler, it's a common problem for cyclist. They'll probably prescribe Albuteral.

Not all asthma is as easy a fix as taking albuteral.... I take advair twice daily as a preventative with albuteral on the side.
The best thing you can do though, is to know your bodies limits. Once you understand your body you can start to work with it instead of against it.

Speaking of understanding your body, have you ever heard that cyclist have a higher chance of developing exercised induced asthma?
An old coach of mine had a theory that cyclist can push themselves farther and breath harder because we are stretched out and sitting on the bike. He also thought that because of this we damaged our lungs and developed asthma. I'm not sure, any specialist out there?
