My husband and I first took up biking as a cheep form of transportation about 17 years ago when we stopped traveling for a living. Our son was 2 years old and since we traveled we didnt really see the impact polution was having on the earth. We first settled in New Bedford Massachuttsetts by the Acushnett river and found out that the river and harbor were infested by PCB's. As I became more involved in the enviromental issues in that area I started to see the "bigger picture" around the world. I cant stop a war or end crime but I can help stop polution at least on my end. We were living in a city that has really rotten bus service and the taxi's were just as bad. So bicycling became daily transportation as opposed to owning a car or useing public transportation. As time progressed I learned how to load groceries and just about anything else onto that bike to get it home. Our son learned to ride a 2 wheeler at about 4 or 5 years old and we would take trips across the city to go to the beach (about 4 miles one way) and has been on one ever since. That was 17 years ago and I havent driven a motor vehicle or owned a driver's licence in that entire 17 years. We now live in Baton Rouge Louisiana and even though they have a much better bus system the taxi service still stinks but we are still on our bicycles. No they arent the originals we started out with 17 years ago. We now ride $59.00 Walmart mountain bike cheepies that we equiped with bike racks for loading with groceries etc. but for durability and performance I would put them up against any $1000.00 bike out there. Mine gets a daily work-out as my only transportation and can carry about 50+ pounds of stuff. Plus I dont care and would like to see gas go up to $10.00 a gallon. Maybe more people would ride a bike.
