Dear Whitey,
On a serious note, I am thinking about getting a road bike for recreational usage; what do you recommend and what should I look for while shopping?

I have always felt like you get the most bang for your buck with Giant. We ride the high end ones on Team Einstein's but the less expensive models are really good as well. It basically comes down to budget when you’re buying a bike. Besides buying something that fits properly, wheels will make the biggest difference. I have always liked the Mavic Ksyriums, they are durable and fast. As far as shifting goes, I would get something with Ultegra or higher in the rear. You can get away with something cheaper on the front if you want. If you plan on having it for awhile, make sure it's a 10 speed and not 9 because nine is pretty much obsolete. The Giant TCR AO (or something comparable) is around $2000 and has everything you need. If you spend less you'll probably have a Shimano 105 component group which is also good depending on how smooth you are and how much you ride. A carbon rear triangle and fork will make your ride more comfortable. And last but not least, make sure you find a seat that is comfortable. It probably won't be the one that comes with the bike. I have used the same seat on all my bikes for two years now. It's different for everyone, so see if they'll let you swap them out until you find what you need.
