Pre MT Evans

Posted by whitey on 7/16/2007 on whitey's blog

I feel like such a lamo preparing for tomorrow's training ride today. Normally I just do what I have to do but tomorrow involves driving to my destination and beating the afternoon thunder and lighting storms. It will be my last open day for awhile so I figure I better make the best of it and go do a ride I have never done but always wanted to do. The highest paved road in America which winds its way up to the top of Mt. Evans is what I choose. I’m going to start at Idaho Springs so the ride will be 56 miles and 7,000 feet of climbing.

Description
A great summertime ride. For a 14-1/2 mile ascent, start at Echo Lake. This is the highest paved one-way road in the continental US. Easy grade -- averaging about 5% -- so it's not a killer climb, just a relentless one. Great, great views. And of course the ride down is an absolute blast. Best to do it on a weekday; weekend traffic can be heavy. Or get an early weekend start to ride up before car traffic gets bad. (You want to be off the mountain by 1 pm typically anyway, since afternoon thunderstorms are common.) More hardy cyclists can start in Idaho Springs (28 miles to the top, 7,000' of climbing) or Bergen Park (and approach the mountain via the Squaw Pass road).

Mt. Evans summit: early season training ride

Every year when the Mount Evans summit road opens, I always ride this. Great for getting my lungs used to altitude for the season ahead. I believe it's the highest paved one-way road in the US (14264 ft), and the grade is pretty easy.
