My editors at YourCycling.com asked me to list my top 10 favorite road races. OK, here goes... --Whitey Debroux
1) North Boulder CRIT - Boulder, Colorado - 90 minutes
Laps around North Boulder park which is filled with fans, many of whom are legends in the sport.
2) Joe Martin Stage 1 - Fayetteville, Arkansas - 110 miles
A break usually goes early but will get caught after the final climb so the race is pretty controlled. It’s the downtown sprint finish up Dickson Street that has given me two top 15 NRC finishes. My chance to show off a little.
3) Joe Martin Stage 2 - Fayetteville, Arkansas - 92 miles
Starts only 14 hours after the 110-mile stage and the pace is fast all day. Comes down to a downhill sprint finish where I like to use a 54 tooth chain ring. Fast and sketchy, just the way I like it.
4) Tour de Toona - Altoona, Pennsylvania - 6 stages (and they all hurt)
I’m not sure why I like this race? Every year on about stage 4 I swear I’ll never ride my bike again.
5) Tour de Nez Stage 3 - Lake Tahoe, California - 106 miles
What’s not to love about racing by Lake Tahoe. Altitude, Attitude, and Bikinis!
6) Tour de Nez Final CRIT - Reno, Nevada - 90 minutes
Downtown Reno, tons of people, very fast corners and a nice party afterward.
7) Tulsa Tough Twilight CRIT - Tulsa, Oklahoma - 90 minutes
NASCAR fan meets road racing in downtown Tulsa under the lights! You get to hear drunk people yell "CRASH, CRASH!" The $30,000 purse isn’t bad either.
8) Tour of the Gila Stage 5 - Silver City, New Mexico - 105 miles
Considered one of the hardest stages in America with five categorized climbs. Again, I’m not sure why I like this one. It really hurts.
